Important Information for the Holiday Season
All Internal / External moonlighting applications must be processed by 4:00pm on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 in order to moonlight or provide locum coverage over the holiday season.
Please note that the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia will be closed for the holiday season as of 12:00 pm December 24, 2009 and will not re-open until 8:00am on Monday, January 4, 2010.
MOONLIGHTING
Residents wishing to moonlight during the holidays are encouraged to submit an application to the College as soon as possible to expedite the process as it can take several weeks for all required documentation to be received by the College. Supporting documents can be submitted to the College as they become available. The College will hold the application on file until all required documentation is received.
External Moonlighting enables Dalhousie trainees, during their residency training, to provide locum tenens (moonlighting) during their final two years of specialty training or in the final year of family medicine training. Applicants can only practice within the scope of training received by the applicant to date and must possess the LMCC. It is not intended for residents to work in an unsupervised setting, with the exception of solo family physicians.
Internal Moonlighting enables Dalhousie trainees, during their resident training, to provide medical coverage in their free time in the tertiary care teaching hospitals in Halifax (eg. CCU). Applicants can only practice within the scope of training received by the applicant to date. It is intended that the postgraduate trainees will be supervised in the same fashion as they are during their residency training. It is recognized that moonlighting is outside the scope of an educational license. All applicants must be in PGYII or beyond in their training and possess the LMCC or other acceptable examinations.
PLEASE DO NOT START YOUR MOONLIGHTING/LOCUM COVERAGE UNTIL YOU RECEIVE CONFIRMATION FROM THE COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS OF NOVA SCOTIA THAT YOU HAVE BEEN GRANTED A LICENSE TO PROVIDE MOONLIGHTING / LOCUM COVERAGE.
Please be aware that if you have an educational license it is an offence to moonlight or to do locum tenens, etc. unless you have been granted a defined license for postgraduate trainees. Also be aware that your insurance provider is unlikely to cover you if you are not properly licensed, nor will you be paid by MSI if you moonlight without the proper license. You may also be subject to a complaint before the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia and/or be charged with an offence under the Medical Act.
