In order for physicians to prescribe methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) for opioid use disorder, an exemption must be granted by Health Canada under Section 56 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Exemptions are granted based on the support of the College.
To obtain an exemption to prescribe MMT for opioid use disorder, physicians must:
To arrange mentorship with an experienced MMT prescriber, physicians must contact the College’s Methadone Maintenance Support Program (MMSP) at (902) 421-2216. Upon completion, the mentor will submit a completed and signed mentor form to the College.
All exemption requirements must be met for the College to support an application to Health Canada for a Methadone Exemption for Narcotic Dependence.
Exemptions to provide methadone maintenance treatment must be renewed every 3 years.
