Postgraduate Training Licence

Basic Requirements

Physicians undergoing postgraduate medical education at Dalhousie University are required to hold a Postgraduate Training Licence.

The basic requirements for a Postgraduate Training Licence with the College are:

  • be a graduate from a university or school that meets criteria approved by the Council of the College;
  • have examination(s) acceptable to Council (e.g., Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination; Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination – Part I; United States Medical Licensing Examination);
  • be enrolled in a post-graduate or felllowship training program; elective training; or a clinical traineeship with Dalhousie University; and  
  • meet the College's requirement for English Language Proficiency.

Registrants on the Education Register as postgraduate trainees may not engage in the independent practise of medicine.

Elective Training

For postgraduate trainees currently enrolled in a training program in a medical school outside of Nova Scotia and will be doing an elective in Nova Scotia. 

PGY1 Canadian Medical School Graduates

For Canadian medical school graduates entering postgraduate training at Dalhousie University at the PGY1 level. 

PGY1 Non-Canadian Graduates

For international medical school graduates entering postgraduate training at Dalhousie University at the PGY1 level.

Fellowship Training

For fellowship training with Dalhousie University. Hospital Fellowships at the QEII Health Sciences Centre or the IWK Health Centre (that is NOT registered through the Postgraduate Medical Education office at Dalhousie University) requires a Defined Licence.

Postgraduate Training (all other levels)

For the following:

  • Physicians who have been in full-time practice in Canada and are now re-entering postgraduate training.
  • Physicians who have been enrolled in a training program elsewhere in Canada and are transferring to Dalhousie University.
  • Physicians who are graduates of international medical schools and are entering a program at Dalhousie University at any level of training (other than PGY1).

Clinical Traineeship

For a clinical traineeship at Dalhousie University for physicians who do not currently hold a licence in Nova Scotia.
