College AGM to feature public symposium on complementary and alternative medicine

Halifax, May 27, 2002 - In conjunction with its annual meeting, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia is hosting a free public symposium on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) at the Highland Suite of the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax on Saturday, June 1, from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm.

The College's annual meeting will follow from 12:30 until 1:30.

Rather than debate the merits of complementary and alternative medicine, the symposium will provide practical information to physicians and others who believe that the best quality health care involves good doctor-patient communication, informed consent, ethical rigour and evidence-based treatment.

Keynote speaker Dr. Mel Borins of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, will discuss clinical perspectives on CAM.

Dr. Nuala Kenny of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University will discuss ethical perspectives on CAM.

Frances Cheyenne Coady, a Halifax social worker, will discuss consumer perspectives on CAM.

Karen Mann, PhD., of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, will discuss medical-educational perspectives on CAM.

Presentations made at the symposium represent the views of presenters only, and are not necessarily endorsed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.

The College requests that video cameras, audio recorders, and flash cameras not be used while symposium presentations are in progress.

Speakers will be available to discuss their presentations following the symposium at 12:30 pm.
