Health Professions’ Colleges Receive Prestigious
National Awards

Halifax, November 9, 2007 –
Two Halifax-based regulatory bodies are doing their
part to put Nova Scotia’s leadership on the
national map. The College of Physicians and Surgeons
of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) and the College of Registered
Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) each received noteworthy
recognition recently from the National Quality Institute
(NQI) for their organizational excellence.
At a gala presentation in Toronto on October 24,
2007, CPSNS received NQI’s Order of Excellence
Award and CRNNS received the Canada Award for Excellence:
Gold Trophy. Other organizations receiving NQI awards
included Delta Hotels, Ricoh Corporation and Statistics
Canada.
"This award is a significant recognition of
the product and service quality improvements the College
has made since the late 1990s," said Dr. Cameron
Little, Registrar and CEO of CPSNS. "The College
has made great strides in its responsiveness to stakeholders,
operational efficiency, and strategic preparedness,
and we are delighted that the NQI believes these successes
deserve national recognition."
“Achieving a culture of excellence has taken
commitment and discipline on the part of so many,”
said Linda Hamilton, Executive Director of CRNNS,
“including our staff and Council, our suppliers
and partners, and registered nurses from across the
province. We’re extremely proud of our journey
to date, and already have our sights set on even ‘bigger
and better’ levels of staff and stakeholder
satisfaction.”
The College of Physicians and Surgeons and the College
of Registered Nurses are the first physician and nursing
regulatory bodies, respectively, in the country to
receive these prestigious awards.
“The award recipients represent outstanding
role models of effectiveness and leadership,”
says Kevin Dougherty, Board Chairman of NQI and President
of Sun Life Financial, Canada, “… and
are making a positive impact on the growth of the
Canadian economy.”
NQI’s annual awards program recognizes Canadian
organizations that have demonstrated sustainable measures
of continuous improvement through their commitment
to innovation, productivity, ethics and a healthy
workplace.
Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle
Jean, is the Vice-Regal Patron of the NQI Canada Awards
for Excellence.
